Develop a Biozone Algorithm within the Soil & Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) Accounting for Impact of On-Site Waste Water

Title  – Develop a Biozone Algorithm within the Soil & Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) Accounting for Impact of On-Site Waste Water

Project Leader  – Santhi Chinnasamy, Ph.D.

Activities –

  1. Reviewed the existing literature on the biozone that develops in soil matrix due to on-site septic system effluent delivery and the fate and transport of nutrients from on-site septic through subsurface soil zone and the water quality impacts on ground water and surface water.
  2. Information on different types of septic tank systems is being collected.
  3. Conceptualization and methodology for modeling within watershed model, SWAT, is being developed.
  4. The developed model will be tested to study the impacts of various types of septic tank systems on watershed water quality. A user-friendly Arc View GIS interface will be developed.
